About Tezpur

Originally named "Sonitpur," Tezpur derived its name from a fascinating legend. In ancient times, a fierce battle between Banasura's army and Krishna's army resulted in extensive bloodshed, causing the entire region to be drenched in red. Consequently, Sonitpur earned its new name, "Tezpur," which is derived from the Sanskrit words "Teza" meaning blood and "Pura" meaning city. This etymology highlights the historical significance and mythological roots of Tezpur.

Tezpur, situated on the shores of the Brahmaputra River in the Sonitpur district of Assam, is a city steeped in history and mystery, with a wealth of ancient artifacts and mythological significance. Recognized as the fifth largest city in Assam, following Jorhat, Guwahati, Silchar, and Dibrugarh, Tezpur holds a special place in the region's cultural heritage.
